Ask for the Swanton Berry Farm Label
- J ust
a few years ago, there were only a few small organic strawberry
farms.
Today, there are many new "brands" of organic strawberries in
the marketplace. Large corporate farms have moved into organic
farming, which is good news for all of us who want a cleaner environment.
Most of the organic strawberries on the market today are actually
grown by large corporate 'contract' growers who pack their product
into a "brand label". When you buy the brand, you are actually
buying from a large marketing company, not directly from the farmer.
This is a very common arrangement in the produce industry, and
has some advantages because it allows a marketing company to source
its product from different contract growers in order to ensure
a steady supply.
Nevertheless, Swanton Berry Farm has not taken this approach.
We continue to grow everything we sell; we do not contract with
other farmers to grow for our label. We can therefore assure our
customers about our growing methods and our labor practices for
every single box we produce. All Swanton Berry Farm products,
from strawberries to cauliflower, are 100% Organic and Union grown,
packed and delivered. Even our Farmers' Market employees are covered
by the Union contract.
Our commitment
to brand integrity means, however, that our supply of product
is limited to what we actually grow ourselves on our farm. And
since we don't have "deep pockets", it remains a small farm. As
a result, we are able to supply only select Natural Foods stores
and Independent Grocers within the San Francisco Bay region. Look
for us at Whole Foods Stores in Northern California, Rainbow Grocery
and Real Food Stores in San Francisco, Monterey Market in Berkeley,
and Draeger’s in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. In Santa
Cruz try Shopper’s Corner and New Leaf Markets. If you are having
trouble finding our strawberries or other products, give us a
call and we'll let you know where you can find us.
We also sell at Farmers' Markets from May through November:
Aptos/Cabrillo, Saturdays
- Marin Civic Center, Thursdays and Sundays
- San Francisco Ferry Plaza, Saturdays
- Menlo Park, Sundays
- Berkeley, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays
- Santa Cruz, Wednesdays & Sundays
Also look for our broccoli, cauliflower, peas, artichokes, celery,
lettuce, corn, tomatoes, and winter squash throughout the year.
